Dimensions
- Duduk Length with Reed: 43 cm
- Material: Apricot Wood
This is a truly original gift for your friends, family, or colleagues—one that combines both cultural depth and musical beauty.
The Duduk is a cylindrical wind instrument traditionally made from Apricot Wood, and typically measures between 28 cm and 40 cm in length. It features eight or nine holes, including one thumb hole, which allows for a range of slightly more than one octave. The instrument’s sound is produced by a double reed (known as ramish or yegheg in Armenian), which is typically between 9-14 cm in length. A thin, flexible wood binding wraps around the reed, allowing it to be tuned by adjusting the opening and closing of the reed.
The sound of the Armenian Duduk is often described as warm, soft, and velvety, with a lyrical and emotional quality that can deeply move listeners. Its timbre is uniquely nasal yet smooth, capturing the spirit of Armenian music.
While other countries, such as Georgia, use different types of fruit and nut trees (like plum and walnut) to make their duduks, the Apricot Wood of Armenia is considered the best material for crafting this instrument. The apricot wood enhances the Duduk’s ability to produce a distinctive, warm tone, making it the preferred choice for this instrument in Armenia.
Other versions of the duduk found in neighboring countries often have a sharper, more nasal tone due to the types of wood used. In contrast, the Armenian Duduk has been specifically developed to create a softer, more melodious sound that resembles the human voice, adding an expressive and intimate dimension to its music.
