The khachkar (cross-stone) depicted in this piece contains elements of Armenian khachkar art. Khachkars have been sculpted on church walls and installed in church yards as architectural ornaments since the IV century. Besides being objects of spiritual worship, these stelae “recorded” stories that contain important historic evidence about the internal and external life in the country. Khachkars marked historical events, the construction of cathedrals and churches, springs, bridges and other structures.
Khachkar developed and acquired its unique artistic style during the long V-VIII centuries.
