Presentation of Christ in the Temple: Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, manuscript number 2563, Gospel of Queen Keran, Cilicia, 1272.
The miniature icons are painted with modern tempera paints, on recycled wood, measuring 30x42x3cm. We used shiny gold leaf (imitation) and varnish to preserve traditional medieval methods. While it is possible to substitute the types of materials, we maintain the skills and traditional rules of miniature art.
Having graduated from painting school with a focus on miniatures, miniaturist, Levon Zakyan, dedicated his life to the study and development of miniatures. Each of his works exhibits an intimate expression of traditional rules and principles of miniature painting. Utilizing a rigorous and meticulous process, the artist begins with thumbnail images and increases their size, thereby creating entirely new icons. Zakyan’s works can be seen adorning the walls of countless Armenian churches, both within Armenia as well as in the Diaspora. Through his art of miniatures, Zakyan strives to express thoughtfulness. elegance, and exclusivity of Armenian culture.
