Tigran II, also known as Tigran the Great, holds the distinguished title of “King of Kings” in Armenian history. He was one of the most successful monarchs in the world but remains relatively unknown in the West. Tigran’s military prowess was unmatched—he conquered all of Mesopotamia, Parthia, and even challenged the mighty Roman Empire.
The title “King of Kings” was uniquely held by Tigran the Great, as evidenced by ancient coins. Even Parthia, a formidable empire of the time, could not claim such a title. Plutarch wrote, “Tigran, the King of Kings, never appeared in public without at least four kings waiting to meet him.”
Cicero, reflecting on Tigran’s successes in the East, stated that he “made the Roman Republic tremble with his valor.”
Under Tigran II’s reign, Armenia flourished, becoming the most powerful state east of the Roman Republic. His empire reached its greatest territorial extent under his leadership.
