The Armenian alphabet was developed around 405 AD by Mesrop Mashtots, an Armenian linguist and ecclesiastical leader. Armenian illuminated manuscripts form one of the most beautiful traditions of Medieval Armenian art. Manuscripts were adorned with fantastical creatures and birds, which often formed the initial letters of chapters to attract the eye.
