Church Carpet
Hachn, Cilicia- Early 19th century,
Dimensions: 120x174cm
The ornamental design, blooming from the intricate, cross-bearing flower bouquet at the center, gradually unfolds to express the mystery of the Four Evangelists—the pillars of the church—through the depiction of four trees. Between them is the Holy Spirit, symbolized by a stylized white dove.
The floral bouquet is framed above and below by three-stemmed candelabras. In the upper and lower sections, the carpet design represents an altar curtain adorned with trees of life. A row of buds stretches toward the center, signifying life-giving faith.
The wide ornamental band features crosses from which pomegranates and vines emerge—motifs commonly found in Armenian church sculpture as symbols of Christ. Miraculously saved from the Armenian Genocide, this carpet stands as a monument to the artistry of this carpet-weaving school, whose centuries-old traditions have tragically vanished.
