“Erkatagir Alphabet”

N01 Erkata’gir Alphabet (Երկաթագիր Այբուբեն). This is the oldest Armenian known letter type. It takes its name from Erkat (Երկաթ) meaning “iron” in Armenian, perhaps because it is the earliest known script chiseled onto the stone with the help of iron tools. It is sometimes called Mesropean Erkata’gir, bearing the name of Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet in 405 AD.
